Seit Beginn des Jahres gibt es erstmalig in gedruckter Form eine Auswahl von 26 der besten journalistischen und dokumentarischen Arbeiten junger deutscher Fotografinnen und Fotografen.

Der Bildband emerge 011 zeigt ihre Sicht auf Themen aus In- und Ausland und präsentiert vielfach ausgezeichnete Geschichten aus internationalen Kriegs- und Krisengebieten aber auch aus Deutschland.

Some say Berlin is young, hip and artsy. I say it’s funny because it’s got pink pipes.
Funky rumors have been spreading just as the pipes themselves do all over the city.

What are they? Tube mail, heat pipes or some giant artwork? Why does one often see them running along streets, sneaking around corners, looping above crossroads, crossing fences, vanishing into bushes and appearing out of treetops?

There is a simple and very practical answer to it: Berlin has got wet feet.

Groundwater level is quite high at an average 2 meters below the surface. Therefor almost every building has its ankles in a subterranean puddle. When a new building project starts impeding groundwater needs to be drained off the foundation pit. The pipes are to pump away the water towards the next river or canal.

If you come upon a pink pipe next time, follow its course. You’ll either arrive at a building site or at the other end of the line. That is either the river Spree or a canal and you might see a shallow stream of water purl out of the opening at the end piece of the pipe.

And why are they given these quirky turns and twists? There is a practical answer to this, too. During cold winters when temperatures fall to 15° Celsius below zero or less there is threat of material shrinkage and breakage. They are a method to compensate thermal expansion (and shrinkage) by interrupting long linear parts of the line.

An astonishing discovery is that one can even see the pipes from space! Well, if zoomed in properly, of course.
After a quick web research I could make out their cradle – the yard of a construction service company situated in an industrial area at Hohenschönhausen, a district in the northeast of Berlin.

I am happy to announce “Der Atem der Straße // The breath of the street”, my first street photography show.
I will be presenting 48 selected prints showing street scenes from Vietnam, China, Tibet as well as Italy, Germany and the Baltic states. Taken in such different places the pictures shine a light on the foreign and the familiar and draw the eye to one subject in particular: the urbanites in their habitat.

Neun Fotografen westlicher Herkunft, neun Sichtweisen auf Asien. Sie alle verbindet, dass das Fernweh sie einst gen Osten trieb und sie nun seit einigen Jahren in verschiedenen Ländern Asiens leben und arbeiten.

Ihnen gemeinsam ist auch, dass sie sich jeweils mit einem Blick von außen ihren Sujets nähern. Dabei haben sie jedoch nicht die Stereotype des Durchreisenden, weil sie schon lange mit dem jeweiligen Land vertraut sind; vertraut und zugleich fremd in ihrer neuen Heimat.

„State of the Union“ ist anlässlich der gleichnamigen Ausstellung erschienen, die von November 2010 bis Januar 2011 im Kunstmuseum Bonn stattfand. Das Buch ist eine Zusammenführung zweier Serien Epsteins: „Recreation. American Photographs 1977-1983“ und „American Power“.

Sich mit einer Serie von Fotografien auf die Suche nach so etwas wie einer Weltseele zu begeben, klingt nach einer großen Herausforderung. Der Fotograf Henrik Spohler ging dieses Wagnis ein und erarbeitete über einen Zeitraum von fast einem Jahrzehnt eine Serie von Bildern, die er in seinem Buch „global soul“ zusammenfasst.

At some point I remembered a story I had been intrigued with when I was a child. It is called “Paul is alone in the world“. Paul, a little boy, suddenly becomes aware of the fact, that all other people have disappeared.

First he is very much enjoying the situation and starts doing things that usually are forbidden. After a while, however, he becomes horribly bored because there is nobody around he can share his pleasure with.

I think, there is a certain element of distraction clinging to this gedanken experiment that I am still fascinated by. How would man-made space appear if its essence was taken out of it – man himself?

The idea of “60-second slices of present” is to study that. If I expose a frame for one minute static objects remain sharp while everything in motion either blurs or even disappears depending on its speed.

To produce these pictures I do as follows: I mount my medium format camera to a tripod and compose the frame. After that I mount a pair of strongly light-reducing neutral density filters onto the lens. Then I open the shutter using a cable release and fix it for 60 seconds. I measure this period using a stop watch.

I always use a 80mm lens, as normal lenses do not distort perspective and render a scene in a similar way as the human eye would perceive it. Thus, I avoid falsifying or even dramatizing the pictures of places, urban space and buildings. Honesty is the base for my experiment with time.

I am stopping down the aperture to the smallest value possible. At f/22 the image bears a high depth of field and the depicted scene is rendered crisp sharp. Using very slow black and white film material with a sensitivity of only 25 ASA helps to depict sharpness in detail without showing any significant grain. This way the only possible blur in the images is caused by objects in motion.

By doing this series I reduce myself to always using the same means and tools to provide similar aesthetics to the photos. Each frame should be speaking the same language as the others.

Looking at the results, I like the aspect of time in them. Flowing water transforms into a matte surface with an argentine glow to it, people seem to vanish.

These photos evoke the question of what time actually is and how we perceive it. With “60-second-slices of present”, however, I am not necessarily looking for answers. That is not important to me.

It is rather that each picture is an approach that is based on an idea and the imagination how motion could be rendered on a still image medium. It is impossible to anticipate or even calculate what would happen.

If I am lucky, chance might be my propitious assistant. If I am not lucky, well, then I just keep on doing the experiment.
